These Floss Rule Decodable Sentence worksheets help students apply their learning of short vowels and final double consonants to writing sentences. Each given sentence focuses on a specific phonics skill with minimal irregular high-frequency words. They support students as they work from reading and writing words in isolation into constructing a controlled, decodable text.
Students cut out the given word cards and paste them to assemble realistic, decodable sentences to match the given picture. Once the sentence is assembled, students write it correctly onto the given lines practicing foundational skills. Each page also contains a reminder for capitalization, punctuation, and proper spacing between words.
Don’t want your students to cut them out? No problem! Just tell them to color each word as they use it. This is more difficult, however, so be sure students are ready for this step!
What's included:
o 7 pages of two sentence scrambled sentences
o 7 pages of answer keys - perfect as scaffolded support for students too!
High frequency words included in the sentences: he, what, to, do, she, has*, here, is*, the, was, green, boy, so, blue, likes, play, his*, you, me, see
Please note: there are some digraphs included and some words contain a final s.
I would highly recommend using these scrambled sentences during whole group or small group instruction first. Young students will need support in understanding sentence formation as well as sentence conventions. Once students have this foundation, these worksheets are perfect for independent practice during centers, small groups, morning work, or homework.
Students need more support? Have students complete this during your small groups or with assistant support while others complete independently. Or, have students work with a partner to identify the given sentences and paste them, then have them complete the writing independently. Each answer key page includes a traceable model sentence and a blank second line. For students needing the most support, give them the answer key and have them match the cards to the given sentences before gluing, then trace, and then write the sentence independently.
Students need less support? Have students construct their own sentences not using the given cards. The cards can be used as a helpful word bank, or cut out before duplicating. This challenges students to use their own phonics skills to write a sentence with grade appropriate content and spelling. This is a great next step towards independent writing.
