FREE SCIENCE LESSON - “Alternative 5E Lesson Plan Template for Science in High School”

by Lab In Every Lesson
6th - 12th Grade

If you’re looking for a structured way to implement NGSS and inquiry-based science lessons in a high school classroom, this alternative 5E lesson plan template will provide the framework you need to engage students while maintaining academic rigor, classroom management, and assessment alignment. This lesson plan template for science keeps the essence of the 5E instructional model but adapts it for daily, student-centered learning, making it easier to implement within a single class period while ensuring students actively engage with science concepts.

What’s Included in This 5E Lesson Plan Template for Science?

This structured lesson plan template for science has been redesigned to better fit high school classrooms and accommodate real-world constraints while ensuring students are engaged in authentic scientific discovery.

✅ Review & Preview → Activates prior knowledge before diving into a new concept, using thought-provoking questions, real-world phenomena, and academic connections to establish a meaningful learning experience.

✅ Observation Activity → Places students in the driver’s seat as they investigate scientific phenomena through hands-on experiments, collaborative tasks, or digital simulations—without relying on expensive lab setups.

✅ Data-Dependent Analysis → Instead of immediately providing direct instruction, students analyze their own data, identify trends, recognize cause-and-effect relationships, and apply their findings to construct meaning naturally. This step encourages students to think and work like scientists.

✅ Skill Practice & Formative Assessment → Ensures learning transfers from activity to assessment by allowing students to apply knowledge in multiple ways (exit tickets, reflections, peer discussions, and structured problem-solving). Teachers can quickly correct misconceptions before they take root.

✅ Student-Centered, Inquiry-Based Framework → By placing students in active roles instead of passive listeners, this lesson plan template for science increases engagement, enhances retention, and fosters critical thinking skills.

How This Alternative 5E Lesson Plan Template for Science Improves Classroom Management

This template isn't just about engagement—it’s also about structure and student accountability. When students take ownership of their learning, behavior problems naturally decrease.

  • Students must stay engaged to complete the lesson successfully, making it easy to distinguish between students who need support and those who are simply not putting in effort.

  • Performance is tied to participation—students quickly learn that engagement is essential for success, helping establish a culture of high expectations.

  • Lessons require collaboration, analysis, and discussion—boosting rigor and creating flexible opportunities for differentiation as needed.

  • No more passive note-taking! With this approach, students are doing science daily, making observations, asking questions, and solving problems instead of memorizing definitions.

How This Alternative 5E Lesson Plan Template Supports Growth Mindset

True science learning isn’t about getting the right answer on the first try—it’s about the process of discovery. This framework creates a learning environment where students understand that:

  • Failure is part of the processscientists are wrong more often than they are right.

  • Science is iterative—students refine their understanding through experimentation, questioning, and analysis.

  • Resilience, grit, and critical thinking are built through multiple trials and continual improvement.

This growth mindset approach allows students to see that science is an evolving process, just like their own learning.

Who Is This Lesson Plan Template for Science Designed For?

✔ High school science teachers looking to increase student engagement and implement more inquiry-based instruction

✔ Educators who want a structured lesson planning framework that still allows for flexibility and differentiation

✔ Teachers in any learning environment (traditional, hybrid, cyber, or homeschool) who need a consistent structure for inquiry-based science lessons

Why You’ll Love This Alternative 5E Lesson Plan Template

✅ Easy to Implement → Works within a single class period while maintaining the depth of inquiry-based learning.

✅ Supports NGSS and Inquiry-Based Science Lessons → Aligns with best practices in science education.

✅ No Expensive Equipment Needed → Uses free web-based tools to facilitate inquiry-based science lessons in any educational setting.

✅ Proven Classroom Success → Developed by an experienced science teacher who understands the realities of high school classrooms.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “FREE Poetry Madness Bracket - Distance Learning - Google Drive”

by Secondary Sara
7th - 12th Grade

Teach 32 classic and contemporary poems, in-class or distance learning, through POETRY MADNESS brackets! Celebrate April's National Poetry Month, even if you are teaching remotely this spring.

After reading poems, filling out their own brackets, and predicting the winners, students will use Google Forms to participate in 5 rounds of voting to determine which poet reigns supreme.

Afterward, there's an optional poetry analysis activity provided to quickly and easily assess student understanding of the poem.

I made this activity to use with my own Google Classroom and with grades 7 and 8, but the poems are rigorous and will absolutely be challenging for high school as well. I attempted to choose a variety of new and commonly-taught poems and poets. Most hyperlinks to the poems go to The Poetry Foundation website.

Check out all my poetry resources or other Google resources here.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Sara

NOTE: This resource will remain free through at least June 2020.
