Ready for November ESL?

Let’s hit the ground running! The idiom “hit the ground running” means to start something and immediately work very hard and effectively.

It’s the perfect phrase to describe what every ESL teacher aims to do at the beginning of each month—especially in November! With the holiday season around the corner and various school events popping up, getting your lesson plans in order can feel like a race.

But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered so you can “hit the ground running” with your November ESL planning.

What Every ESL Teacher Should Cover in November

In November, I think it’s important to focus on key language skills that align with students’ proficiency levels. Here’s what I like to teach in November at each level:

English Newcomers:

  – Focus on Possessive Pronouns:

Teach simple possessive pronouns like “mine,” “yours,” and “ours” to help students express ownership and relationships.

  – Story Sequencing: I use “The Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” to teach basic question formation and sequencing skills, essential for building foundational English comprehension.

Beginner:

  – Reinforce Possessive Pronouns: Continue practicing “mine,” “yours,” and “ours” with more context and examples.

  – Storytelling & Comprehension: I like to encourage students to ask and answer questions about “The Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” to enhance their understanding and sequencing abilities.

Intermediate:

  – Mastering Regular Verbs & the Three Sounds of ‘ed’: This is the perfect time to dive into the different sounds of the past tense “-ed” endings and ensure students can pronounce them correctly.

  – Engage with Song: I use the “Three Sounds of ‘ed'” song to make learning fun and memorable while reinforcing regular verb conjugations.

– Early Advanced:

  – Phrasal Verbs & Academic Vocabulary: November is an excellent month to introduce or review phrasal verbs, paired with activities contrasting informal and formal vocabulary to prepare students for more advanced language use.

  – Advanced Questioning & Sequencing: I continue using “The Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” to challenge students with higher-level questioning and more complex sequencing tasks.
