Teaching Grammar to English Learners in Elementary School ✏️

When it comes to the debate about whether or not ESL teachers should be teaching grammar to English language learners in elementary school, there are some important points worth considering. First and foremost, it’s essential to recognize that grammar is an integral part of any language and especially when it comes to mastering English. The ability to use grammar correctly can be the difference between a student being able to express themselves accurately and clearly in both written and spoken form or struggling with their pronunciation, meaning, and comprehension.

Teaching Grammar and more

At the same time, however, it’s important to remember that English language learning is more than just grammar. To become truly proficient in a language requires fluency across a range of topics including:

  • culture
  • idioms
  • slang
  • literature
  • conversation

Teaching grammar in isolation may help students with particular aspects of language but won’t help them develop real-world communication skills.

Teaching Grammar with Balance

Given this, there needs to be a balance when teaching ESL students in elementary school between teaching grammar for accuracy versus fluency for practical use. Grammar should absolutely still be taught but alongside other strategies such as providing engaging content such as videos or songs

for practice and encouragement; using games like charades or conversation board-games;

utilizing stories or role-play activities; and providing feedback on pronunciation rather than solely focusing on grammatical correctness.

Ultimately, teaching ESL at the elementary level requires recognizing that learning a new language involves so much more than memorizing rules of grammar; instead it encompasses embracing different cultures while also developing an understanding of conversational norms. If ESL teachers can strike an effective balance between teaching both accuracy and fluency within their lessons then they will give their students the best chance possible of achieving mastery over English which will set them up well for later success in their studies and beyond.
