Math Curse 😊

 Hi everyone,

Math Curse by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith: A Must-Read for Elementary Teachers

“Math Curse,” written by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith, is one of my absolute favorite math books. Published in 1995, this delightful book tells the story of a boy who begins to see math everywhere in his life. From the moment he wakes up, he starts noticing math in everything he does, turning everyday activities into fun and interesting math problems.

What is it all about?

The book starts with the boy’s math teacher saying, “You know, you can think of almost everything as a math problem.” This simple statement triggers what the boy calls the “math curse.” Suddenly, he sees math in all aspects of his daily routine. From figuring out how many minutes he has to get ready for school to calculating the number of cupcakes needed for a party, the boy encounters math problems everywhere. Even something as simple as choosing clothes or eating breakfast turns into a math challenge!

Furthermore what makes “Math Curse” so special is how it brings math to life for elementary students. The story is funny and engaging, with quirky illustrations that capture the imagination. The boy’s journey through his day helps kids see that math is not just about numbers and equations in a textbook. Instead, it shows that math is a part of our daily lives and can be both useful and fun.

How can I use it?

As a teacher, you can use “Math Curse” to introduce a variety of math lessons. The book can be the starting point for discussions about time, measurement, addition, subtraction, and much more. It encourages students to think creatively and see math in the world around them. Plus, the humor and lively illustrations make it a hit with kids, keeping them entertained while they learn.

Finally, Incorporating this book into your classroom can open up a myriad of math lessons. It’s a great way to show students that math is everywhere. It can be a fun and integral part of their daily lives. Whether you’re reading it aloud to the class or using it to inspire math activities, “Math Curse” is a fantastic tool for elementary teachers.
