Speed debating! Introduce debating to beginners in a no-stress, fun, student-directed lesson. Tiny one-on-one debates on high interest topics will gently ease beginners into debate. They will debate four times in a one hour class using four of the eight provided topics, such as "Confidence is the most important quality in success" and "Going to the mall is more exciting than going to the movies."
Each time they will face a single, different ‘opponent’. They will give a speech, and ask and reply to a few questions. They will have 7 minutes prep time before each debate, then debate for 4-5 minutes. At the end of each round, students will complete brief peer and self-evaluation slips.

Practice of persuasive techniques as part of a writing unit.

Handouts to be distributed
Graphic organizers: 1 page, double backed. If you are very kind you could copy one
organizer for each person for each debate (4 for each student) but only a single one should really be necessary. After the first debate students can simply follow the format on note paper, or even on a laptop.
1 page of peer evaluations (students will cut the sheet into 4).
1 page of self-evaluations (students will cut the sheet into 4).
