Which is which? lie, lay, or laid

Hi everyone,

We all goof this one up!

Just to remind us when we are getting ready to lie down or if we are lying down.

Present tense of the verb ‘to lie’:
I lie, or I am lying
you lie, or you are lying
he/she lies, or he/she is lying
we lie, or we are lying
they lie, or they are lying

past tense:
I lay, or I was lying, or I have lain
you lay, or you were lying, or you have lain
he/she lay, or he/she was lying, or he/she has lain
we lay, or we were lying, or we have lain
they lay, or they were lying, or they have lain

Whew!

Teaching lie, lay, and laid to ESL learners can be tricky because these words have similar meanings but are used in different ways. To make it simpler, start by explaining the basic differences between them. “Lie” means to recline or rest in a horizontal position, like “I lie down when I’m tired.” “Lay” means to put or place something down, like “I lay the book on the table.” And “laid” is the past tense of “lay,” used when talking about the action that was completed in the past, like “Yesterday, I laid the book on the table.”

Provide lots of examples and practice exercises so students can get comfortable with using these words correctly in different contexts. Additionally, using visuals or acting out scenarios can help reinforce the concepts and make learning more engaging.

The game will work for younger and older grades.

This Powerpoint template can be easily modified. All you need to do is input data that fits your class; everything else is already done (eg. attractive design and neat animations)!

How the game works:

  • On the screen the students will see a slide with four boxes. In each of the boxes there will be a statement - only one statement is correct.
  • There are four options for how to run this with your class.
  • For each slide students will read the statements and then go to the letter in the classroom that correlates to the correct statement.
  • When the teacher advances the slide the correct box will be revealed.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Phonics Mats for Beginning Readers Decodable Readers”

by I Love 1st Grade by Cecelia Magro
Kindergarten - 2nd Grade

Have you ever taught a lesson in phonics and wondered if the learning stuck with your students? If so, then phonics mats are for you! Phonics Mats are phonics-based text for students to decode and practice targeted phonics skills.

Students take the skills they learned in phonics and apply them using phonics mats. Phonics Mats allow students to practice segmenting, blending, encoding, decoding, and reading comprehension.

This free sample includes one phonics mat for each short vowel. Try it out in class and see how great they are!

Phonics mats have so many uses. You can use them as part of your phonics lessons. You may have the students work on them when you are pulling reading groups. They work well as early finisher work if you use them after students are taught the targeted skill. Phonics mats can be used as intervention and even as homework.
