If you’re a brand-new ESL teacher or a seasoned ESL teacher, you might feel overwhelmed when it comes to increasing language proficiency in English learners, but don’t worry! With the right strategies and tools, you’ll feel equipped to guide your students through a year of learning and growth.
Here are some tips and tricks that can help all teachers increase language proficiency in English learners:
#6: Language Learning Websites
Recommend reputable language learning websites that offer free resources and activities for English learners. Websites like ESL Gold, EnglishClub, or British Council’s LearnEnglish provide interactive exercises, quizzes, and learning materials.

#8: Conversational Partners
Connect English learners with fluent English speakers or native speakers who can serve as conversational partners. This can be done through language exchange programs, peer tutoring, or virtual language exchange platforms like ConversationExchange or Tandem.
#9: Language Assessment Tools
Utilize language assessment tools to track students’ progress and identify areas for improvement. Tools like the WIDA MODEL, ACCESS for ELLs, or Cambridge English Language Assessment can provide valuable insights into students’ language proficiency levels and help guide instructional planning.
#10: Professional Development and Workshops
Attend professional development workshops or webinars that focus on effective strategies for teaching English learners. These workshops can provide insights into language acquisition theories, instructional methodologies, and best practices for supporting English learners’ language development.
