This is a color and create storybook, which is to say, it is meant to be colored in and completed by the children, tweens, and teens you read it with.
At the end, there are 10 optional questions to spark discussion. Each question is formatted to be appropriate for all ages, though the conversations the questions will start will vary by age group and how youth answer each at different developmental stages.
If you are reading this book with a class each student can complete one of the pages, for example, increasing sense of ownership over this book and allowing more time to reinforce learning through conversation.
If you’re reading this book as part of counseling with children impacted by the war in Ukraine, coloring in and completing the pages will provide time for verbal processing. Coloring, as a bilateral motion, is also known to be cathartic as part of trauma work.
This book was a labor of love—many hours went into developing a book that would be educational and build empathy for children not impacted by war while also serving as a springboard for trauma work for children impacted by the war in Ukraine. This is my first time doing something like this, so please feel free to leave feedback with suggestions! :)
