As teachers of second language learners we know that cognates or words that look and/or sound similar in two languages are abundant in academic language. Common Core State Standards (CCSS) asks us to increase vocabulary and comprehension. Second language learners, can benefit in these areas with lessons about cognates. Research tells us that learning about cognates teach students to look for them in their reading, enhances attention to words and comprehension and finally transfers to other content areas.
