FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Reading Comprehension for Dyslexic Students - Turkey Time story”

by Kathy Hutto
3rd - 4th Grade

Dyslexic students struggle with reading. In my experience, the IEP usually involves modifying by verbally reading the material to the child. This can be time consuming for the teacher and embarrassing for the student.

This resource includes a specialized font. The letters have weighted bottoms, which helps differentiate direction. This helps keep your brain from rotating them around. Consistently weighted bottoms can help reinforce the line of text. The unique shapes of each letter can help prevent confusion through flipping and swapping. There is also wider spacing between the letters. It is recommended that the punctuation marks be bold to help the student recognize the stops.

I wanted to let you know that I have created a simple comprehension activity entitled Turkey Tree House. It’s an original story with ten comprehension questions. Teachers can download it for FREE and try it out.

I’ve also included Reading Rulers in this resource. I have found that it really helps to have a colored guide that the student can move under each line as she reads. That way, she can only see just one line of text at the time and not be overwhelmed. I’ve also tried letting the student put the ruler above the line she is working on. That seems to be equally effective and in some cases seems to work better!

Be sure to let me know if this helps the dyslexic students you are working with. I'll try to get some more sheets uploaded soon, so follow my shop so you will be alerted when those are ready.
