FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - "Motivating students to edit their writing!"

Are your primary students interested in every part of the writing process?

When my first grade students wanted nothing to do with editing their writing, it became clear to me that they a) simply did not see the point of it, and b) were not interested! A wise colleague asked me if I showed them how hard it was to read their writing without spaces and punctuation.

It was so simple, yet I had them reading their writing to me one by one, because, of course, I couldn't read half of it myself,  AND the early-finishers were into everything. My methods resulted in mayhem. I had been trying too hard.

I wrote the equivalent of what they were handing in on the board that very day. My highest readers could not figure out what the string of letters in a row said, until I separated them with spaces and periods. And then, the little light bulbs popped on, one by one.

           https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/That-Fun-Reading-Teacher

I left strings of letters as morning messages for weeks, and we corrected them together. They GOT the spacing and punctuation issue. And when I made them a picture-based editing checklist, they were thrilled.  An added bonus? The early finishers had something to color! Phew! Visit my store and get the 5 Point Editing Checklist free!

What has been a light bulb moment in your teaching?

The freebie, and a related product!

Are You Teaching Similes?

Similes: A Readers Theater

Recommended for grades 2-4

Hello Teaching Friends!

A couple of weeks before spring break, we were learning about similes...and how they make our writing more vivid because of the pictures they create in our minds. Some really got it...while others just needed more experience playing around with this figure of speech. So out of need, I came up with a brief readers theater that seemed to work for them.

Have you got a few theatrical students who can't wait to speak up? This set provides a great opportunity to review or learn more about similes (for the dramatists or the hesitant readers), as well as practicing reading with fluency and confidence.

Use the script as is, or edit your own text...including altering the number of and names of the cast (readers). As is, there are twelve parts, but you can split reading parts, or combine them depending upon the number of students you have in your group. Add more voice and "character" to the script as you see fit.

I absolutely love readers theaters, and it's just so easy to do...and usually a lot of fun...but without the big hassle of putting on a play. Kids learn a lot without pencil and paper! They feel no real pressure as they practice reading. I always tell them that the first reading is supposed to be rusty. Struggling readers use their memory and comprehension to facilitate their fluency. Everyone is involved...nobody gets left out.

Thanks so much for checking this out! Visit me at Growing Smart Readers, where you'll find plenty of free and priced engaging ELA resources.

LANGUAGE ARTS - "Scooping Words With One Closed Syllable & One Vowel-Consonant-e Syllable"

by Reading on Strawberry Lane

Grades 1-3

Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables. Syllables can be divided by saying them orally or by using a pencil and paper. If we orally divide a word into syllables, we usually clap the word out. For example, if we orally divided the syllables of dislike, we would clap out ‘dis’ and ‘like,’ and that would be two claps. If we divided the syllables on paper, we would place a slash between the ‘s’ and ‘l’ in the word ‘dis/like.’

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: d i s I I k e. Not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of an extra letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables.

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice scooping words with one closed syllable and one vowel-consonant-e syllable.
