Five different activities which keep students engaged are included in this product. See Preview for samples of answer keys.
st Activity: Using the grid provided in the resource or using your own grid paper, students will discover the meaning of zero and negative exponents by writing powers of 2 and relating the values to areas of squares and rectangles. This activity makes very clear that 2 raised to the 0 power is 1. The values of 2 raised to a negative power are modeled also. The activity continues in a similar fashion using squares and rectangles to model powers of 3. 5 student pages
nd Activity: Guided notes are given on definitions relating to writing numbers in exponential and expanded form. Students will be guided to use these forms to discover the rules of exponents for multiplying and dividing numbers with like bases. 3 student pages
rd Activity: Multiple choice questions dealing with properties of exponents are given to have students choose which expressions are equivalent or not equivalent. Students are instructed to justify their answers. 2 student pages
th Activity: Topics covered - Square Roots, Cube Roots, Irrational and Rational Numbers, Equations with the variable squared or cubed. 5 student pages
th Activity: I Have - Who Has Game on exponents, square roots and cube roots
