This common core aligned poetry unit enables students to understand what is meant by identity and how poetry can be used as social commentary. They will build on their poetic vocabulary in order to recognize how poetic devices can be used to enhance meaning and will demonstrate that knowledge through daily writings, quizzes, class discussion, group activities, and a final essay or presentation. The package includes answer keys for all quizzes as well as a rubric for grading the final essay. This is a great lesson for middle school students and can easily be adapted for use in high school or even college classrooms. It's one of my students' favorite lessons. Find it at
