Common Core requires that when writing informational texts students know how to introduce a topic and how to write a concluding statement that supports the information presented in the writing. This handout is useful as a mini-lesson for students about how to open and close their essays. It outlines 7 ways for students to write introductions that grab the reader's attention and 5 ways for them to write conclusions without resorting to tired and boring methods. Examples are given for each method, and it includes some "Avoid at all costs" suggestions as well as activities for students.
