FREE MISC. LESSON - “Pinterest Collaborative Boards Tracking Pins Sheet”

by Teacher Profits
K-12

Nothing is more annoying than a pinner who keeps repining their product or blog post. And not only is it annoying it is the easiest way to get kicked off of a collaborative board. Since many sellers know the power of collaborative boards on Pinterest, it is important to be able to track when you pinned something and to which board. I would encourage you to download and use this tracking tool to help you track your pins.

HOW TO USE:
1. The PDF is editable, so you can copy and paste your board names and emails.
2. Then print out all of the pages.
3. To use this system, add your product or blog post title and date of pin, circle the board code(s) of the board that you added the pin to.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Catch a Wave with the Four Types of Sentences”

by Beth Mitchell and Emily Steffen
2nd - 5th Grade

This is a pretty easy and quick review to do with your class. I copied my pages with the sentences back to back and then copied the types of sentences on colored paper. I laminated all of these copies so these could be used year after year. The four types of sentences are leveled (there is an easier version with the words: command, statement, question, and exclamation and a harder version with the words: interrogative, declarative, imperative, and exclamatory). I cut apart the words and put them into baggies and then gave students the sentence page and they would put which type of sentence it is in the box. I would then walk around the room to check or we would just answer orally as a class. There is also a poster that you can use if you would like!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Free: Who Was Responsible for the Holocaust? (Common Core Aligned)”

by Sherri Munger-Tyler
8th - 12th Grade

Who Was Responsible for the Holocaust?
Common Core Aligned

This critical-thinking activity asks students to determine who was responsible for the Holocaust and to what extent they are guilty of crimes against humanity. Students create a circle graph (or pie chart) in which they assign the person(s) responsible the percentage of responsibility they should bear for the Holocaust. All percentages must add up to 100%.

Student choices include:

RED: Residents of Auschwitz and other towns near concentration camps who knew about the camps but did nothing to stop them.

BLUE: Minor Nazi soldiers who carried out the mass extermination orders without questioning their superiors.

GREEN: Hitler, the leader of the German nation who hated Jews and other “undesirables” and wanted them destroyed.

YELLOW: German citizens who voted for Hitler and the Nazi Party to revitalize their morally and economically depressed country.

ORANGE: The Jews who did not try to escape.

PURPLE: Top SS officers who designed and executed the "final solution" for Hitler.

BROWN: Non-Jewish Europeans who turned against their fellow citizens for fear that they too would be imprisoned as Jewish sympathizers.

WHITE: Leaders of the Allied countries who saw evidence of the Holocaust, but initially refused to get involved or voice opposition to Hitler.

PINK: Churches of all denominations who remained silent and refused to intervene when confronted with evidence of the Holocaust.

BLACK: Yahweh, the God of the Jewish faith, who seemed absent and silent during this massive genocide.

I have used this activity with huge success with 8th graders following "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Night" by Elie Wiesel. Reminders that their work will be posted and should reflect their personal pride have always resulted in a thoughtful, meaningful wall display.

This 5-page product includes:
-A Cover Sheet
-Activity Sheet
-Learning Objectives
-Teaching Tips
-Common Core State Standards

The integration of art, math, and a hands-on activity differentiates this authentic assessment beautifully.

As always, formatted in Word so you can quickly and easily adapt this product to meet your unique classroom needs.

Happy Teaching!
Sherri Munger-Tyler

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Character Analysis by Making Inferences Organizer”

by Keep Calm and Teach
3rd - 8th Grade

Students often have difficulty making inferences about character emotions, actions, and other areas. This will guide students to think about what characters say and do, what other characters say about a specific character, and what the narrator tells about a character. Based on these observations, students will easily be able to make inferences about the specific character being studied. This really helped my students who struggled with this standard.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Buddy Reading Tiny Discussion Cards”

by  K Dupre
2nd - 4th Grade

I made these little cards to help keep my "buddies" engaged in meaningful conversations while partner reading. I copied mine front to back on colored cardstock, laminated, chopped, hole-punched in the corner, and made little rings of questions that buddies can easily grab.

I teach my kids a pattern for buddy reading -
Partner A reads a page while B listens and follows along.
Partner B asks A a question from the ring.
Partner B reads a page while A listens.
Partner A asks B a question from the ring.

It seems to help both partners stay on task even if the other one is reading.

Thanks! If you'd like to check out my blog post about these handy cards just click the link for Teacher Trap. :)

How to Implement Accelerated Reader in Your School or Classroom

Does your school have the Accelerated Reader Program, but you wish it could be utilized more effectively?  You may want to try some of the ideas I have implemented at my school and in my classroom.   More than 100 students read Accelerated Reader books and take the corresponding tests in the Computer Lab during our after school reading program.  Students are continually reading and taking tests throughout the day in my classroom.  Here is how I started...

Teachers and parents volunteered their time labeling our library and classroom Accelerated Reader books. Rather than just using colored dots, our books are color-coded using Avery labels (e.g. red for first grade, purple for second grade, yellow for third grade) AND have the actual book levels clearly marked (e.g. 4.5, 4.6, 4.7).

The point labels are displayed right below the book labels on the spines of the books. I used fluorescent labels so that they can be easily seen and to help differentiate between Accelerated Reader books in the school library (green), classroom library (pink), and core literature sets (yellow). Clear labels were put on top of the book level and point labels to keep them secure.

During the after school reading program, parents help students check out Accelerated Reader books in the library.  After the students have taken their Accelerated Reader tests on the computer, teachers write the new book levels on slips of paper. If the student received 80% on an Accelerated Reader book with a 3.5 book level, the student chooses a new book with a 3.5 book level. If the student received more than 80% correct on an Accelerated Reader test, the student may choose a new Accelerated Reader book with a 3.6, 3.7, or 3.8 book level. If the student received less than 80% correct on an Accelerated Reader test, the student may choose a new Accelerated Reader book with a 3.4, 3.3, or 3.2 book level.

Kindergarten and first grade students are read “The Story of the Day” by upper grade student helpers. The student helpers read the questions to the students and help them take the Accelerated Reader tests on the computers.

Parents are invited to our monthly awards ceremony. Prizes are given to the students who made it to the 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100 Point Clubs. Trophies are given to the top three students in each grade at the end of the year.

I have also created an Accelerated Reader accountability system for my own classroom. Students are given one ticket if they have passed an Accelerated Reader test with 60% - 90% accuracy. They receive two tickets if they received 100% on their test. At the end of the month, students write their names on each ticket and put them in various prize containers. One ticket is pulled from each of the containers and that particular prize is given to the student.

Our successful Accelerated Reader Program almost came to an end because our computers kept crashing. I was in charge of a group of teachers who wrote a grant to the Golden State Foods Foundation. We received $49,000 for 32 brand-new flatscreen Apple computers.

Feel free to email me at vleon999@yahoo.com if you have any questions about setting up your own Accelerated Reader Program or if you would like to know more about the Golden State Foods Foundation grants.

Wishing you the best,

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Catch-22 Analysis Questions Chp. 1-6, p. 7-59”

by Adam Horowitz
12th Grade

These questions are all designed to assist students in getting the most out of a single reading Joseph Heller’s satirical masterpiece, Catch-22. All questions place a special emphasis on higher order thinking, as well as College Board’s AP literature expectations in regards to making inferences, understanding irony, and in general a rather rigorous, college-level approach to literature. These materials can be used for Honors classes as well, for any teacher looking to give their students the kind of push that the new Common Core standards are aiming for.

I have been teaching for 16 years, including several years teaching English Honors IV, as well as creating my own very successful Advanced Placement Literature program from scratch nine years ago. I have a Masters in Creative Writing, and thought I would make some of my materials available for purchase.

If you end up using the materials, let me know how things go for you. My name is Adam Horowitz, and I'm a sixteen year educator. You can e-mail me at adam.horowitz@browardschools.com.

All questions were written using the Simon and Schuster paperback copy of Catch-22. They could easily be adapted to other versions, however, the accompanying page numbers would need some altering.

These questions are also designed to be used in conjunction with a Catch-22 test. This test includes 48 multiple choice questions based on these analysis questions, as well as an essay question designed to assess students’ overall understanding of Heller’s satire.

Finally, consider looking into the complete novel package. It includes all background materials, nearly two dozen quizzes, these questions and the test. Check out the description for more info.

If you’re tired of students simply SparkNoting through literature, consider giving my materials a try.
