Some puzzles I have used over the years just do not work well; these all do. What they have in common is that they are challenging, engaging to all students, and effective problem-solving/critical thinking activities.

Some involve language skills, some involve math, and some both. All you need is your marker, a whiteboard, and a few minutes of extra time. Answers provided (of course). PLEASE RATE THIS FREE PRODUCT IF YOU FIND IT WORTHY.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Hunger Games Mockingjay Halloween Pumpkin Template Word Search”

by Tracee Orman
5th - 12th Grade

You & your students can create a mockingjay-themed carved pumpkin using this template. I also included the template in outline form and other sizes for additional activities.
To top it off, there is a Hunger Games-themed word search featuring gory words related to the Games--may not be for everyone! Use your discretion if you are using it with younger students (many words deal with death, dying, killing...to go along with the Halloween theme).
Use for Catching Fire & Mockingjay units, as well. Great activity for library or family reading night.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Guided Reading Lessons - TEKS - Grade 3”

by Mark Lyons
3rd Grade

Guided Reading Lessons – TEKS – Grade 3
This set of lessons is intended for use by teachers and students as a resource for guided reading lessons. A reading passage paired with a poem serves as the basis for guided reading lessons and to help assess student knowledge of reading objectives. Each lesson is correlated to the reading TEKS for Texas.
Instructions for using the selections as guided reading practice are included. They are designed to provide teachers with before, during, and after reading lesson plans to help guide students through the selections. A list of higher level vocabulary words found in the passages comes with the lessons. Multiple choice as well as short and extended answer questions follow the paired selections. Each question is designed to assess a specific reading objective. An answer key is also included. It tells the correct multiple choice answers and examples of best-score short and extended response answers.
The set of passages can also be used as stand alone assessment pieces without the lesson plans. Students independently read and complete the passage and question items. The teacher can then either score each assessment passage apart from the students and report back to them as to how they performed or the teacher can score the passage in class together with the students allowing for immediate feedback and discussion.
If you like the Guided Reading Lessons – TEKS – Grade 3, please go to my website (www.readingwarmupsandmore.com) to view and purchase additional products for TAKS and TEKS reading practice.

FREE MATH LESSON - “Number Tiles: FREE Problem Solving Activities for the Primary Grades”

by scipi
Kindergarten - 3rd Grade

This FREE Number Tiles resource is a ten page booklet containing six different math problem solving activities for the primary grades. The activities extend from simple counting, to greater than or less than to solving addition and subtraction problems. Since the students do not write on the pages, they can be copied and laminated so they can be used from year to year. Students solve the Number Tile Math Activities by arranging ten number tiles. The number tiles can be made from construction paper, cardboard, or square colored tiles. (How to make the number tiles is included in the handout.) Each activity is on a single page, and varies in difficulty. Since the students have the freedom to move the tiles around, they are more engaged and more willing to try multiple methods to find the solution.
These activities are suitable for the visual and/or kinesthetic learner.

FREE MISC. LESSON - “How to Record Audio on GarageBand”

by spanishplans
Kindergarten - 12th Grade
This pdf shows you how to make a voice recording on a Mac computer using the Program GARAGEBAND.
You can use this program in multiple class and across any grade level to assess students.
I personally use this in foreign language to have my students record themselves and then I can assess their pronunciation. It's the closest to a Language Lab as I can get!
I know elementary teachers use this for reading fluency. The students read a passage and can listen to themselves.
You could save these files the students create and use them to create an audio portfolio.
Note: This is specific to the program GarageBand. You must have this program installed and have a microphone (either external or internal) to be able to record audio.
You can use this HOW-TO sheet to teach yourself how to do it, or have a copy for the students to use.
